چکیده

We report on deep VLT observations of the fields of two nearby, isolated millisecond pulsars PSR J1744-1134 and PSR J1024-0719. Both objects are old neutron stars with characteristic age τ ≥ 10 yr and have relatively high spin-down flux. They have been detected earlier as X-ray sources by ROSAT HRI observations and were considered good candidates for non-thermal emission in the optical bands. Our observations set an upper limit of B = 26.9, V = 26.3 and R = 26.0 for PSR J1744-1134. In the case of PSR J1024-0719, we find two faint objects near the radio position of the pulsar. Using multi-band photometry from the VLT and spectroscopy carried out with the Magellan I telescope, we discuss the nature of the brighter object and the possibility of the fainter one being the optical counterpart of PSR J1024-0719. We consider the implications of our findings for both pulsars in the context of theoretical models of high-energy emission from old pulsars.

HST and VLT observations of Isolated Neutron Stars

New results of HST and VLT observations of isolated pulsars and their environments are presented. We present the first deep optical observations of the nearby pulsar PSR J0108-1431, the identification evidence of PSR 1929+10 based on the proper motion measurement of its optical counterpart and a deep investigation at optical wavelengths of the X-ray PWN around Vela.

VLT observations of the solitary millisecond pulsar PSR J 2124 − 3358 Roberto

About 100 millisecond (ms) pulsars have been identified in the Galaxy, and only ≈ 10% of them are solitary, i.e. without a binary companion. Nothing is known on the optical emission properties of millisecond pulsars. Observations of solitary millisecond pulsars are the only way to detect their faint optical radiation, otherwise buried by the brighter white dwarf companion. As in the case of sol...

Deep Xmm-newton Spectroscopic and Timing Observations of the Isolated Radio Millisecond Pulsar Psr J0030+0451

We present deep XMM-Newton EPIC spectroscopic and timing X-ray observations of the nearby solitary radio millisecond pulsar, PSR J0030+0451. Its emission spectrum in the 0.1–10 keV range is found to be remarkably similar to that of the nearest and best studied millisecond pulsar, PSR J0437–4715, being well described by a predominantly thermal two-temperature model plus a faint hard tail evident...

Polarization observations of nine southern millisecond pulsars

Mean pulse profiles and polarization properties are presented for nine southern pulsars. The observations were made using the Parkes radio telescope at frequencies near 1330 MHz; three of the nine pulsars were also observed at 660 MHz. A very high degree of circular polarization was observed in PSR J1603−7202. Complex position angle variations which are not well described by the rotating-vector...
